Most "never store this in a shed" answers are written as if every shed were the same box. They aren't. And the real dividing line usually isn't what an item is made of. It's temperature, moisture, and how the thing is packaged.

The failures worth preventing are rarely dramatic. They're the slow ones. A cracked jug that stains a shelf. A fertilizer bag that rots out a floor panel. A battery pack that cooks quietly through August. A pegboard hung on the door that pulls the latch out of alignment by Christmas.
Two Factors That Explain Why Stuff is Broken

A resin shed asks almost nothing of you — no rust, no repainting, no rot, no annual seal coat. The trade-off is heat and chemistry.
60°C. On a still, sunny afternoon, a closed-up resin shed can push past that inside. This one number explains why batteries age fast, why aerosols vent, why sealed glass fails, and why "it's been fine for years" stops being true during one bad August week. Everything below traces back to it.
Solvents. Thinners, banana oil, epoxy resin, strong adhesives, and some pesticide concentrates will haze, soften, or permanently mark a plastic panel — sometimes from vapor alone, without a single drop spilling.
Everything else about resin works in your favor. Roof and snow load run 80+ kg/m² (16+ psf), the panels are waterproof and UV-stabilized, and there's no organic material for pests or mold to feed on — which is more than a wood shed can say.
For contrast, briefly: a metal shed sweats. Fast temperature swings condense water on the inside of the panels and it drips onto whatever sits below, so paper, fabric, and bare steel tools suffer there in ways they don't in resin. A wood shed absorbs — anything damp or edible slowly becomes part of the structure's problem. Same item, three different failure modes.
And within any one shed, the same object can be fine or a mistake depending on handling. A wiped-down hand tool on a wall hook is a completely different situation from the same tool tossed damp into a back corner.
Anything a Mouse Would Eat
Pet food, birdseed, grass seed, livestock feed, camping snacks — these belong in a shed only inside a rigid container with a lid that actually seals. Paper sacks, thin poly bags, cardboard, and open buckets are all invitations.
The damage compounds. Once a bag is chewed open or takes on damp, seed and dust work into floor seams, shelf brackets, and corners you can't easily reach. The smell outlasts the food, which keeps drawing traffic. Then your next Shed Cleanout turns into a two-hour job instead of twenty minutes.

Chemicals: The Label Outranks Your Habits
Paint, caulk, adhesive, cleaners, pesticide, fertilizer, pool chemicals, sealants, fuel additives — treating these as one category is how people get into trouble. They behave very differently, and the printed label is more reliable than whatever you've been doing for years.
If a label asks for indoor, cool, dry, frost-free, upright, ventilated, or locked storage that your shed can't deliver, the answer is no. Freezing wrecks a lot of water-based products outright. Heat does quieter damage: separated formulas, built pressure, seeping caps, warped bottles.
A few habits prevent most of it:
- Put every liquid in secondary containment — a tray, a shallow bin, a plastic tub. Costs almost nothing, catches the leak you don't know about yet.
- Keep incompatible things apart. Pool chemicals never go near fuel, oil, fertilizer, or a mixed shelf of cleaners.
- Resist the cleanout instinct to consolidate half-empty bottles to save space.
- Fertilizer and pesticide: sealed, boxed, and not touching the shed wall. Concentrate vapor is corrosive to plastic and genuinely unpleasant in a closed shed on a hot day.
- Car-care liquids — wash soap, wax, washer fluid — are fine, but crank the caps down. Heat finds every loose one.
That fourth rule is the resin-specific one, and it's worth taking seriously. Solvent-heavy products and fuel cans are the two categories to be strictest about in a plastic shed.
Batteries, Chargers, and Anything With a Circuit Board
Electronics drift into sheds because they arrive attached to something else: a drill, a string of lights, a projector, a kid's ride-on toy. The problem isn't the shed exactly. It's months of no attention in a space that heats, cools, and collects dust.
Pull lithium-ion packs out of tools before long storage and keep them indoors at moderate temperature, per the manufacturer's instructions. Heat is what ages them — a pack that has spent two summers near 60°C is a swelling risk, not just a dead battery. This applies to mowers, drills, e-bike batteries, and loose power banks equally.
Don't leave chargers plugged in inside a shed unless the electrical setup was designed for it. Running an extension cord out from the house for a "quick" charge shouldn't become the normal routine.
Speakers, cameras, holiday projectors, and small instruments live indoors unless specifically rated for outdoor storage — the day/night temperature swing condenses moisture inside them. Paper, Fabric, and Things You'd Be Upset to Lose
Documents, photos, books, keepsakes, clothing, sleeping bags, textile decor — none of it belongs in ordinary shed storage unless you'd genuinely shrug at losing it. Visible mold is only the obvious failure. Paper and fabric also take on odor, hold dust, become nesting material, and pick up permanent creases from whatever was stacked on top.
Cushions and outdoor covers are a fair fit, with conditions: fully dry before they go in, raised off the floor, in breathable or sealed containers depending on climate. A damp cushion sealed in a bin will not dry out on its own — that's how you get a mildewed cushion in April. Off-season clothing and textiles can work in a waterproof bag, raised 10cm or more off the deck, but they're never the ideal tenant.
Passports, insurance paperwork, warranty documents, and small valuables stay in the house. Worth doing while you think of it: photograph your shed's product label, serial code, and receipt and keep them somewhere searchable. A warranty claim is far easier with that photo than without it.
Fuel, Propane, and the Genuinely Hazardous
Gasoline, kerosene, propane and butane cylinders, oily rags, fireworks, charcoal starter, and certain aerosols come with specific storage requirements. Follow the label and your local rules — this is the one section where "it's probably fine" is a bad instinct.
Fuel cans do not belong in a hot shed next to batteries, chargers, or fertilizer. Gas cylinders should never sit loose where they can tip, roll, or get knocked by a rake handle. Aerosols and glass-bottled liquids belong here too: at 60°C you're well into the range where cans vent and sealed glass fails. Open-flame equipment — charcoal braziers, kerosene lamps, small grills — is a hard no in a plastic shed, not a judgment call.
Storing fuel-powered equipment over winter? Empty or stabilize the fuel per the manual, wipe the machine down so residue doesn't transfer to the floor, and set it on a drip tray — you'll spot a leak on the tray weeks before you'd notice a stain.
Oily rags get their own rule. Never pile them in a corner or shut them in a box after staining or finishing work. Use the disposal method the product specifies. Spontaneous combustion in a closed shed is rare, and it is also exactly how sheds burn down.
Weight in the Wrong Places
"What not to store" also covers where you put it. A resin roof rated at 80+ kg/m² handles serious snow, but walls and doors have much narrower limits — and that's where people improvise.

Use the designated accessory points rather than screwing wherever seems convenient; that's what they're there for, and it's the difference between a secure mount and a stripped panel. Heavy things belong low, on shelving rated for it, and clear of the door swing. Engine blocks, stone slabs, and machine tools are past what a plastic floor should carry — put those on the concrete pad instead.
Two more habits that pay off: don't pack the shed wall to wall. Air gaps let heat move and keep the interior cooler than a stuffed shed. And keep the floor clear of standing water and wet mud — resin won't rot, but a permanently damp corner is still where things go wrong first.
Allowed, With Conditions
- Garden chemicals — if the label permits it, upright and in a tray
- Paint and caulk — if the temperature range is respected and the product is still good
- Patio cushions — bone dry, off the floor
- Power tools — the tool can stay; the battery and charger usually shouldn't
- Metal hand tools — dried first, never in floor contact
- Holiday decor — sealed bins, electronics indoors
- Outdoor rugs — clean and fully dry before they're rolled
- Animal feed — sealed rigid drum only, dry pellets, nothing loose
Sheds are at their best holding things that already live outdoors: garden tools, hoses, empty pots, furniture parts, mower accessories, bikes, fishing gear, and bins of durable seasonal kit.
